Using Trackback and Linkbacks: Blogging Tips

By Sean Grimes

Using trackbacks and pingbacks are an excellent way to build links and traffic to your blog, as well as building relationships with other bloggers.

This feature has been around for quite some time, but many people still may not know too much about it. I’ll briefly discuss using pingbacks. If you find a blog with useful information and then go to your blog and make a post linking to the blog which helped you, your comment will automatically placed on the website with a link pointing back to your site. It’s a really neat concept, but has been abused by many.

Eva, using Trackbacks and linkback is really neat and easy to do. I must admit I was a bit confused at first myself. First, you must have a blog. It would be easier if you had a wordpress blog hosted on a server just as I do. You simply enable trackback/pingback in your blogs admins area. If you run across an interesting blog post, you can leave a comment of the owners site, or you can go to your blog, make a post and link back to the blog you read. This will send a pingback to the original post you read. If everything is in working order, a portion of what you posted on your blog will be posted on the blog you originally read linking back to your site. As long as you are posting relevant information, this is a good way to share links and build your link popularity. Some blogs don’t accept pingbacks. In this case, you’ll have to look for the trackback url. In most cases, this url is right before the comment section. You simply take that trackback url, make a post on your blog linking back to the original post you read and insert the trackback url into the trackback field when making a blog post.

This may sound a bit foreign if you don’t have a blog, but it really is quite easy.
